Rheinfall and the schaffhausen sprint

We have just had one of those toddler days where, if the sheer force of a toddler tantrum could be harnessed for energy I reckon some of our energy problems may have found a soulution.

We arrive at Schaffhausen and dash is building a hurricane of a tantrum in the back seat. G and I are determined to see this town. G is at the ticket machine for a while, I wander over at the same time an elderly Swiss gent approaches. We both observe that g is determined to shove coins into the credit card slot. On one hand one can appreciate this as an act of vandalism, reclaiming the parking spaces that should be free for the people. Or, as the elderly Swiss gent seemed to sum up with raised eye brows....befuddlement at a foreign attempt at improvement on Swiss engineering.

We return to the car after destroying a parking ticket machine, only to arrive with dash in full gale. With a shaking of lips and lashings of tears and spit, we walk towards a beautiful town square, which we are quickly discovering are very common in Switzerland. Food is the number one priority, as surely only low blood sugar could turn our angel into this wailing creature... Dash wants a banana, but once purchased wants an apple (please grant us patience) I carry a shrieking bundle of demon spawn towards what sounds like some curious music making while g ducks into a bakery to get lunch. There on a picturesque medieval corner sits a man playing music that sounds like it was indeed crafted in the middle ages. Both d and I were mesmerized by this sound, like bagpipes but played with a crank handle and accompanied by his animated singing. Truly beautiful music and in such a perfect setting. Apple/banana saga forgotten.

With only an hour on the meter we try to take in as much as we can in schaffhausen. Its like we took it all in at a sprint and then quickly ate a kebab with some mystery meat inside, didn't taste like lamb and possibly best not to ask - just eat. D's crankiness escalated at every proffered morsel, until the shop owner (possibly in a vain attempt to glue D's mouth shut) gave him a packet of chewing gum. Further histrionics ensued when we had to take it off him, or risk a large wad lodging in his big toe (that IS what happens when you swallow it, right..?)

Next stop was rheinfell. Wow, the largest waterfall in Europe - was amazing to get so close to such a powerful force of nature. A steep walk down from the castle Schloss Lauren, we were able to stand where we could almost touch them. Thankfully a lift returned us to the surface. I love the Swiss, a lift to visit a waterfall. What efficiency!
